By distancing himself from the kind of tax plan proposed by The FairTax Act of 2003, President Bush narrowly avoided a political catastrophe.
Bush nearly did the unthinkable by supporting action to reduce government size and complexity.
Republican leaders warned Bush that while Republicans often talk about such ideas, they are merely that; ideas.
Rick Santorum (R, PA) said, "What was he thinking? Sure we say things like we want a smaller and less invasive government, but that's just to get votes."
"A good government is one that regulates who people kiss, and what they put in thier butts. That's what I mean by less invasive!"
